What to eat
Traditional Venetian appetizers known as “cicchetti” are the perfect accompaniment for your spritzer or glass of wine. Expect small servings of meatballs, fried vegetables, fried fish, boiled eggs, salami etc. Traditional main courses consist of fish, like “baccalà mantecato” (creamed cod), “sarde in saor” (sardines in onion marinade), “seppie col nero” (cuttlefish in their ink)or “seppie in umido” (stewed cuttlefish with polenta), risotto with fish (gò) and “bigoli in salsa” (wholemeal pasta in anchovy sauce), just to give some examples. “Pasta e fagioli” (pasta and beans soup), “risi e bisi” (rise and peas soup), “fegato alla veneziana” (liver and onions) are very typical dishes too, as well as the vegetables grown in the islands of the lagoon (artichokes - and among them the famous “castraure”, zucchini, asparagus, little salad...). These vegetables are also the main ingredients of many pasta, risotto, and pasticcio dishes. Typical desserts are “Tiramisù”, “sgroppino” (lemon ice cream with prosecco and vodka) and small biscuits (zaeti, busolai, baicoli) with “vin santo” (sweet wine).
